How the conversion works
- CEUs = contact hours ÷ 10. One continuing education unit equals ten contact hours, the definition used by IACET. 15 contact hours = 1.5 CEUs.
- Contact hours = CEUs × 10. 2.4 CEUs = 24 contact hours.
- Contact hours = minutes ÷ minutes per hour. 100 minutes at a 50-minute hour = 2 contact hours. At a 60-minute hour, 90 minutes = 1.5 contact hours.
50-minute or 60-minute hour?
Boards and accreditors do not all use the same hour. Nursing contact hours accredited through ANCC use 60 minutes. Accounting CPE under the NASBA standards counts 50 minutes as one credit, and some other boards also use a 50-minute hour. Your certificate usually states the hours already converted. Use this page when a course lists only minutes or CEUs and your board asks for hours.
Credits, hours and units are not always the same
Some boards say "credit hours" or "CE credits" and mean contact hours. Others accept college coursework at a set number of hours per semester or quarter credit. Read your board's definition before converting, then track the result against your requirement with the CE hours calculator.
FAQ
How many contact hours is 1 CEU?
One CEU equals 10 contact hours under the IACET definition, so 0.1 CEU equals 1 contact hour.
How many CEUs is 30 contact hours?
30 contact hours equals 3 CEUs.
Is a contact hour 50 or 60 minutes?
It depends on the board or accreditor. ANCC nursing contact hours use 60 minutes, and NASBA accounting CPE counts 50 minutes as one credit. Check what your board uses.
Are CE credits the same as CEUs?
Not always. Many boards use "CE credit" to mean one contact hour, while a CEU is ten contact hours. Check the unit on your certificate and in your board's rule.
