How the calculator works
- Hours left = hours required − hours completed (never below zero).
- Hours per month = hours left ÷ (days to the deadline ÷ 30.44).
- Hours per week = hours left ÷ (days to the deadline ÷ 7).
For example, 18 hours left with 183 days to go works out to about 2.99 hours a month, or 0.69 hours a week. The page marks the pace as tight when you need more than 4 hours a month or have 30 days or less with hours still owed. That threshold is a planning cue, not a board rule.
Required topics
Many boards require part of the total in specific subjects, such as ethics, jurisprudence, implicit bias or pain management. Those hours usually count toward the total, so the calculator tracks them separately without adding them on top. Check how your board counts them, and whether it caps self-study or online hours.
Pick the right deadline
Your CE deadline is not always your license expiration date. Some boards require CE to be finished before you submit the renewal, and some use a CE reporting period that does not match the license period. If you only know your expiration date, the license renewal date calculator works out a CE finish-by date with your own margin. FAQ
How many CE hours do I need?
It depends on your profession and state. Your licensing board publishes the total, any required topics, and the period the hours must fall in. The free license renewal deadline check on this site shows typical requirements by profession and state.
Do extra CE hours carry over to the next period?
Some boards allow a limited carryover and many do not. Check your board's rule before counting extra hours toward the next period.
Do required topic hours count toward my total?
Usually yes. Ethics or other mandatory topic hours are normally part of the total, not in addition to it, but confirm with your board.
What if I miss my CE deadline?
Boards handle it differently. Some offer a late-completion window with a fee, and some will not renew the license until the hours are complete. Contact your board before the deadline if you are behind.
